On January 18, 2016, Mesa Police Department officer Philip Brailsford murdered Daniel Shaver of Granbury, Texas. Later that month, the Mesa police department, citing several policy violations that included profanity engraved into his rifle dust cover and unsatisfactory performance, fired Brailsford.
On December 7, 2017, after a 6-week trial, a jury acquitted Brailsford of all charges. It wasn't until after the trial, that the full unedited body camera footage of the shooting was unsealed by the Court.
We've all seen the footage of officers barking confusing orders at Daniel. We remember Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown. Cities around the nation have rallied and It's time we let Mesa know we will not stand by silently.
Please meet at the Mesa City Plaza at 20 E. Main St (also known as Mesa City Hall or City Government) from 4pm-7pm to rally. Bring signs, speakers, megaphones, candles, and your voice. We will have a candlelight vigil when the sun goes down to stay visual. Speakers will be announced as they are scheduled. We have the blessing of Daniel's wife, Laney Sweet, and the support of Black Lives Matter Phoenix .
