How do you find out whether you have unclaimed property?

The Arizona Department of Revenue said it returned more than $57 million in unclaimed property to more than 17,000 people in the agency's latest fiscal year. Wochit

The Arizona Department of Revenue said it returned more than $57 million in unclaimed property to more than 17,000 people in the agency's latest fiscal year.

That was up from $55 million in the prior 12-month period. Amounts ranged from less than $1 to more than $2 million.

Unclaimed property often includes that from non-active bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, income-tax refunds, rebates and returned deposits, according to the department. Property often becomes unclaimed when the company holding it no longer has a current address for a customer. In some cases, property becomes unclaimed if a person dies with no family members or relatives who aren't aware of the assets.

Most accounts are deemed abandoned and turned over to the state after three years of inactivity.

Over the past five years, more than $225 million has been returned to individuals and businesses, according to the department. The right to receive unclaimed money or property never expires.

Individuals and businesses can search for assets by clicking on the "Unclaimed Property" tab at azdor.gov. The process involves filling out a short online form administered by an affiliated website, missingmoney.com. If money is available, individuals then complete and send in Department of Revenue form 600A.
