More problems with the Safer Arizona initiative to legalize marijuana?
The Safer Arizona initiative still makes a number of victimless marijuana crimes illegal, and if you get arrested for those crimes, or receive a ticket for those crimes, you may be denied Food Stamps (SNAP) , Federal College Loans and grants, and possibly other government aid.
I believe that under Federal law people who have been convicted of victimless drug war crimes are NOT allowed to receive Food Stamps or SNAP as they are now called. I also believe the same is true for people who want to get Federal loans and grants for a college education. I suspect this may mean that a person who has received a ticket or been convicted of a victimless marijuana offense under the Safer Arizona law could be denied Food Stamps and Federal grants and loans for college. https://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/student-loan-ranger/2015/04/15/drug-convictions-can-send-financial-aid-up-in-smoke Any federal or state drug conviction, whether it be for the possession, conspiring to sell or sale of illegal drugs, can disqualify a student from receiving federal student aid grants and loans. https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R42394.pdf A SNAP participant may also be disqualified from SNAP based on noncompliance with a drug testing requirement in other programs in states that implement such a requirement. SNAP state agencies may choose to disqualify a SNAP recipient who fails to perform an action required by another means-tested program, such as TANF.48 For example, a state that disqualifies someone from TANF (or another means-tested program) for not participating in or failing a drug test may also disqualify that individual from SNAP. Federal regulation is clear that this comparable disqualification policy applies only to ongoing SNAP cases and not to new applicants. |
